Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make an appointment?
To make an appointment, you can easily browse available times and schedule online by clicking here.
You can also call anytime at 773.598.4177 or email jessicaemelia@gmail.com. I will do my very best to respond to appointment requests the same day.
What do I need to bring to my first appointment?
If you wish to use insurance to cover sessions, please bring your insurance card with you to your first appointment.
What happens during the first appointment?
If this is your first therapy session, you might be wondering what to expect! Many people are surprised to learn how comfortable the first session can be. We begin our first session with completing a few standard forms, as well as discussing confidentiality and other protocols of therapy.
After this, the majority of the session is focused on getting to know you and what brings you to therapy. We will identify your personal goals and what you would like to get out of counseling, as well as decide how frequently we will meet, based on your schedule and needs.
How long do sessions last?
A standard counseling session lasts 45-50 minutes long. Sessions can be longer if needed.
What kind of counseling theories do you use with clients?
When working with clients, my style draws from many counseling theories. I will work with you to determine which approaches might be the best fit for your individual needs. I work thoughtfully to find an approach that feels comfortable, engaging, and appropriate for your areas of need.
My training at Northwestern University focused on many therapeutic approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and client-centered therapy. I am also very interested in reality therapy, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness approaches to counseling.
What are your areas of specialty?
I have experience working with many therapeutic issues. I am particularly experienced and interested in helping people address following issues: anxiety, depression, relationship issues, women’s issues, career guidance, life decisions/coaching, adjusting to new situations, guidance for artists and creatives, weight loss, and general mental health support.
Do you work with couples?
Yes, I frequently work with couples. I assist couples who are looking for support in communicating better, managing conflict, deciding what ‘next steps’ to take in the relationship, working through affairs/infidelity, and pre-marital counseling.
Do you prescribe medication?
I do not personally prescribe medication. As a general philosophy, I believe it is best practice to first see if we can address your needs without medication. However, medication can be extraordinarily helpful for some people. If we decide together medication is appropriate, I can offer referrals to psychiatrists who can prescribe medication.
What if I need to cancel my appointment?
Sometimes canceling or rescheduling an appointment is necessary, and I am happy to work with you to reschedule our appointment to best fit your needs. Please note that due to a limited number of sessions available per week, cancellations must be made no less than 24 hours in advance. Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance will incur an out-of-pocket fee of $130.
